In brief: A City of Revelstoke report recommends creating a development permit area over a section of land at the western end of the Big Eddy to protect the water source there.
The Big Eddy Water District’s source area is mainly in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD), but a small section is within Revelstoke’s boundaries, including the Big Eddy well site.
The area is protected as an environmental and water conservation site and installing this development permit regulation will allow the city more control to ensure future developments do not impact the water source negatively. This would be in conjunction with the CSRD creating a establishing a similar development permit area in their boundaries.
Exemptions to this permit would be for alterations to existing buildings that do not increase a building’s footprint.
The Big Eddy water system currently faces issues with aging infrastructure and its reduced capacity as supply grows.
