Revelstoke Mountaineer: Where do you volunteer?
Sarah Harper: I volunteer with the Revelstoke Theatre Company.
RM: What are your volunteer duties?
SH: I am a member of the board of directors and also volunteer regularly for productions, either behind the scenes as a technician or on stage as an actor.
Why do you volunteer for the Revelstoke Theatre Company?
I have always worked and played in theatres. It was my first love. I was hooked the first time I stepped out into the light in that shiny blue skirt and pink tights at the age of six. A lifetime of learning, playing and working on productions and events has followed that initial spark. I love all aspects of the theatre and the community scene always gives new opportunities for unexpected artistry in every process. And I like theatre people; they’re generally rather colourful.
For you, what’s rewarding about volunteering?
I believe in community theatre. It has the capacity to foster new ideas, new skills, togetherness, communication, patience, tolerance and most of all the magic of seeing a process come to fruition. It’s all wrapped up in one nice tight ephemeral bubble that completes itself right before we tear it down. Then we learn to let it go and start fresh.
What could be better than doing something just for the pure love of it?
It’s simple really. Service is the key to joy and letting go is the antidote. It all happens in the theatre.
