The Mountaineer Volunteer is a weekly, pay-it-forward feature in the Revelstoke Mountaineer that highlights the great work volunteers do to make Revelstoke a true community. Each week, we feature a new volunteer who then nominates the volunteer to be featured the next week.
Brent Strand: Revelstoke Pedal ‘n’ Pint, Bike Fest Revelstoke & Avalanche Awareness Days
Where do you volunteer?
I run the Pedal ’n’ Pint group rides every Thursday at 6 p.m. for the past 10 years
I have been doing the Avalanche Awareness days event in Revelstoke up on Boulder Mountain for 11 years.
I am also involved in organizing Bike Fest Revelstoke for the past three years.
What are your volunteer duties?
Pedal ‘n’ Pint group rides: I have shown up at 6 p.m. to lead a mtb group ride to all the different trails in and around Revelstoke. Keep the group together and encourage anyone to come out and enjoy riding.

Bike Fest Revelstoke: I work with two other folks to organize a three-day weekend of group rides and fun events for people.
Avalanche Awareness Days: I usually work with the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club to put on a day event up on Boulder Mountain promoting avalanche awareness and safety. I put on a couple safety training stations or a poker run style event.
Why do you volunteer for your organization?
It is very fulfilling to get people out mountain biking and encouraging a good social environment. I think with the Pedal ’n’ Pint I have created a fun group ride that many people look forward to near the end of their week.
For you, what’s rewarding about volunteering?
Getting out riding and showing people how much fun and challenging it can be. I have seen a lot of people who have come out regularly really improve their skills and have also become good friends along the way!
