Alberta’s recent provincial election results have us taking a second look at everything coming from our neighbour to the east.
Take, for example, Calgary roots/country rockers Cowpuncher. Their name is Cowpuncher. Whiskey-voiced lead singer Matt Olah wears cowboy boots. Their website is www.wepunchcows.com. So, forgive us for assuming he’s got a Mount Rushmore-style tattoo somewhere on him with Preston Manning, Stephen Harper and Ralph Klein inked in there. Maybe on his ass, so he can say, ‘If you don’t like it, you can kiss it!’
But then there’s things that make you wonder. In all their press photos, they look a lot like hipsters. Is that beeswax manscaping wax in Olah’s moustache? What’s really going on here? Is their tour bus a jacked up pickup or an ironic jacked up pickup? I’m confused.
Looks like you’re going to have to figure it out for yourself. Cowpuncher is known for raw, heartfelt songs, beer-soaked antics and Bourbon-energy shows.
They play the Last Drop Pub on May 28, where they’ll either revive the Reform movement in B.C. or lead a Lenninist revival.
Let’s hope they can play us a few tunes while they’re at it.
