Revelstoke city councillors have postponed any decision-making on a proposed gravel pit on Westside Road until they have more information on its potential environment implications.
At the August 11 council meeting, councillors agreed to defer the requested development permit until city staff had time to do more research.
“Council can ask staff anything they like,” Mayor Mark McKee said. “That’s part of why it’s going back to make sure we’re comfortable in any and all the implications.”
City councillors have received two opposition letters on the controversial issue since the item appeared on the council agenda on August 7. A neighbouring gravel pit was the source of significant controversy when it was proposed about five years ago.
The proposed pit site at 274 and 322 Westside Road is across the river from the Revelstoke Golf Club and could be a potential gold mine for development, but it is provincially-owned Crown land and therefore out of the hands of the city control.
“I think it’s a great piece of property, but as far as is there development being slated or contemplated, the answer is no,” Mayor McKee said.
