Revelstoke city councillors have agreed to bend the rules and allow the Safe Spaces Revelstoke Society group to place a small rainbow flag sticker on the entry doors at city hall.
Safe Spaces Revelstoke Society is an community group for the LGBTQ2S (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirited) in town and their 2″x3″ rainbow stickers is part of a visual campaign to help LGBTQ2S travellers and locals feel safe in town.
The request had previously been denied from city staff as it was considered a “proclamation,” by city staff, something the city doesn’t due according to longstanding policy.
But Mayor Mark McKee said at the August 11 city council meeting it wasn’t a big deal.
“I think this is a local group that is asking for a request no different from Neighbourhood Watch, showing that the city hall is Safe Spaces participant,” he said. “I would rather that we just participate and let it happen. Rather than going back and forth and spending more staff time. I think everyone around here supports the concept [and] they think it is a good idea.”
