Search for drowning victim in Columbia River near Centennial Park

The City of Revelstoke has announced Centennial Park is closed from the top of the hill at the park to the Illecillewaet River Bridge in an ongoing incident this afternoon.

In a brief media release, Revelstoke RCMP say they are searching for a man who they believe drowned in the Columbia River early Wednesday afternoon.

Cpl. Thomas Blakney said three men were swimming in the Columbia River and one didn’t come out.

Police received a call just before 1 p.m. Revelstoke Search & Rescue and Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services join other first responders in a search of the river, including walking the river banks.

The City of Revelstoke has announced Centennial Park is closed from the  top of the hill at the park to the Illecillewaet River Bridge in an ongoing incident this afternoon.

A witness reported seeing emergency vehicles including police, ambulance and fire trucks responding to the park at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

An inflatable search boat can be seen on the river near the area.

Revelstoke RCMP spokespersons were not immediately available for comment. A dispatcher at the police station was unable to comment.

In a tweet to the City of Revelstoke fire department’s account, fire chief Rob Girard said the department was assisting first responders in a search for a missing person on the river.
