The Revelstoke Mountain Resort plans to boost their summer tourist trade with a new mountain coaster ride, to be ready for next spring.

The single-track feature, which would weave its way 1.4 kilometres from mid-mountain down to the resort’s base, can reach speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour. During the winter it would be partly dismantled so it won’t impact skiing activities.
“Gravity based roller coasters have been installed in ski locations throughout Europe and the trend is growing in North America,” Revelstoke Mountain Resort’s management plan states. “Combined with RMR’s current summer breakfast and sight-seeing activities, the single track coaster would offer a much sought after solution for the resort’s summer income drought.”
The coaster, which will cost $15 a ride, features a timing system to allow riders to race the clock. Interval and final times will be displayed along the way and there is a braking mechanism to adjust personal speed.
City councillors discussed the proposal at the September 8 council meeting and voted in favour of issuing a development permit, once the resort complies with a few regulations.
